With the AWE 900 series turbines, a total new concept for the mechanical structure of the nacelle and the connection with the generator was used. Because the generator is a determining factor in the construction, the nacelle is more or less dictated by it. For the sake of well-formed design a design specialist was contracted in an early stage. This led to a design where the outlines of the rotor hub, the nacelle and the tower fluently fit together.
The nacelle is a compact welded construction. It connects the rotor hub to the tower. The nacelle contains the stationary parts of the generator and the ground plate at which the yaw mechanism has been placed. It also houses a service hoist and a switch board. Both generator and tower are flanged to the nacelle.
The geometry of the construction assures an ideal transfer of loads to the tower and has resulted in a simple design.
